2026 State of AI in Medicine

Artificial intelligence (AI) is ushering in a new era in medicine. Recent advances, particularly in generative AI, have expanded its role across administrative and clinical workflows alike. Drawing on survey responses from 3,151 U.S. physicians across 15 specialties and two study periods (March–April 2025 and November 2025–January 2026), this report examines who is adopting AI, how it is being used, what benefits physicians are experiencing, and where barriers remain.

Physician Ratings of Clinical AI Tools

AI-based clinical reference tools are increasingly used at the point of care. This report summarizes results from 1,315 side-by-side evaluations in which physicians compared responses from DoxGPT with those from other clinical AI tools (e.g., OpenEvidence, UpToDate, ChatGPT) using clinical questions they personally posed on each platform.

2025 Physician Compensation Report

This year’s compensation findings include responses from more than 37,000 U.S. physicians in 2024 alone, as well as thousands of physician responses to additional surveys and polls fielded throughout 2024 and 2025. Our study indicates a health care workforce under pressure, with modest physician compensation growth of 3.7%, a persistent gender pay gap of 26%, and growing concern from pediatric physicians about declining reimbursement.

2024 State of Telemedicine Report

Doximity analyzed the adoption of its telemedicine tools across its physician membership and surveyed both physician telemedicine users and patients about their experiences. Both physicians and patients reported telemedicine has increased access to health care services and strengthened physician-patient communications. The majority of physicians also reported telemedicine has contributed to better disease management, improved patient outcomes, and better or equivalent adherence to treatment plans.

2024 Physician Compensation Report

Doximity’s 2024 Physician Compensation Report includes compensation data from over 150,000 survey responses over the past five years, including responses from more than 33,000 full-time U.S. physicians in 2023 alone. Our study shows that the average pay for doctors increased 5.9% in 2023 after a decline of 2.4% the previous year. Still, as physician burnout and workforce shortages persist, 86% of physicians surveyed are concerned about care for an aging population.

2023 State of Telemedicine Report

Doximity’s third telemedicine report found that 88% of physicians surveyed believe telemedicine has increased patient access to health care, particularly among populations that may have faced barriers to care in the past. Report findings suggest a permanent role for telemedicine in health care, with benefits to equitable access and physician productivity and work-life balance.

2023 Physician Compensation Report

Doximity’s 2023 Physician Compensation Report includes data from over 190,000 U.S. physicians over six years and over 31,000 full-time physicians in the last year alone. Our study shows a 2.4% decline in average physician compensation in 2022 and a 26% gender pay gap. Over 86% of physicians surveyed reported being overworked, with more than one-third considering early retirement.

Physician Learning Preferences Report

In order to better understand how physicians prefer to engage with medical news and educational information, Doximity surveyed over 600 physicians across five specialties. Findings show that the vast majority of physicians surveyed are interested in learning about new research, treatments and trials that can help improve patient outcomes, but most are overwhelmed by the amount of information to keep up with.

State of Telemedicine Report, 2nd Edition

Doximity's second telemedicine report found that over 45% of physicians with Medicare telemedicine claims were Doximity Dialer users. In a survey of 2,000 patients, over 73% plan to receive care through telemedicine after the pandemic.

2021 Physician Compensation Report

Doximity's fifth annual Physician Compensation Report includes data from over 160,000 U.S. physician surveys over the last five years. Our study found a 3.8% compensation increase for physicians in 2021 compared to 2020. This year we studied retirement trends and found an increase in physician retirement at the start of the pandemic. Overall, 1 in 5 physicians report they have considered early retirement due to COVID-related overwork.

Doximity's fourth annual Physician Compensation Report is part of a continuing project here at Doximity and draws on a repository of data spanning six years and includes survey responses from over 135,000 licensed U.S. doctors. This is one of the largest data sets of compensation available in the United States. With over 80% of all U.S. doctors as members, Doximity is the largest professional medical network and is uniquely positioned to perform this analysis.

2020 State of Telemedicine Report

The “2020 State of Telemedicine Report,” is comprehensive analysis of telehealth trends in the U.S. since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report includes a patient survey of over 2,000 U.S. respondents on their attitudes towards telehealth, an analysis of online physician CVs, as well as data from the company’s telemedicine feature set, which is used regularly by over 100,000 U.S. doctors.
